Throughout the years, those who design wind turbines, including the wind vertical axis turbine type, have gone about it very differently – many of these wind turbine designs show great promise although there are others that simply demonstrate that a particular direction is not the way to go in the future. The two most recognizable types currently in use are the wind horizontal axis turbine and the wind vertical axis turbine. We’ll be taking a closer look at the two types to determine what type is best for most DIY homeowner applications including the one for your home. If you’re anxious to get started on your own home wind turbine project, I recommend that you check out an excellent DIY solar and wind guide.

By a wide margin, the wind horizontal axis turbine is the type you think about when you think of wind power and its applications – even if you have heard of or seen a wind vertical axis turbine installation, that type is hardly ever used. The familiar aircraft-style propeller of the wind horizontal axis wind turbine that is pointed into the wind by various styles of directional tails cannot be missed by even the most casual observer. It’s easy to take a quick glance at this type of wind power turbine generator and easily ascertain how it works because here, function will always follow form.

The best idea for saving a lot of money fast (with an extremely fast payback time, typically just a few months), is to make the decision to cut down your dependence on the electric utility company by taking swift and positive action as a do it yourselfer to build your own wind horizontal axis turbine which will generate power for your home. Wind power is clean, economical to build yourself and most of all it provides continuing benefits in the form of monetary savings to you every month. I recommend that you start by taking a really good look at a well-written and widely used DIY solar and wind guide like the one in the next paragraph.

Even though they are similar in some ways, a wind horizontal axis turbine varies greatly from its sibling, the wind vertical axis turbine and their differences can be easily spotted – most apparently, with the design of the blades used and the placement of the alternator or generator which the homeowner chooses. A horizontal axis design lends itself well to the use of conventional propeller style blades and if you take a look around at what is available, you’ll see that there are quite a few different designs available and also that there are ready-made prop blades available commercially. This is not the case with the wind vertical axis turbine, which suffers from extremes in the design range possibilities of its blades and a lack of commercial availability. Looking at the many different types of propeller designs which have been designed and tested, it is obvious that varying degrees of success have been achieved.

In California during the most recent wave of design attempts in the 1980’s and 1990’s, many wind vertical axis turbine installations and their associated blades were designed and tried in various configurations. As time passed, everyone discovered that there are certain benefits and also, certain very serious problems with vertical blade designs and implementations. During blade rotation, heavy mechanical stresses impact the blade roots which results in damage that greatly reduces length of service the blades will provide.

Wind vertical axis turbine designs have many continuous and nagging problems that are well known since they always be located in the blade’s center shaft, most specifically in the bearing surfaces that have to provide support. Things are just now getting better after engineers have begun to re-examine wind vertical axis turbine designs after watching them fail time after time in the same ways – it may be quite a while before you know if any of the new engineering approaches will be able to solve the high failure rate of stress failures in the vertical turbine designs.

Almost invariably, those owners of a wind vertical axis turbine report that they have found one area where the wind turbine becomes more entertaining than useful. . .a large percentage of vertical axis turbine owners report that there is an extreme yet pleasant attraction to watching the turbine turn – much like watching a child’s top spin. Naturally, the fact that a mechanical device provides entertainment value when operating does not, of course, add durability to it’s life nor does it make the device any more efficient because it provides said entertainment, yet when you think about entertainment at simple face value, you can be sure that a lot of folks will be glad that their wind vertical axis turbine provides them with some additional benefits beyond the obvious! Maybe the vertical wind turbines are more valuable as works of art!

When you take everything into account, large, commercial wind farms always choose the horizontal wind generator designs over the wind vertical axis turbine since they are so efficient, long-lasting and certainly they require far less maintenance than any other type, a fact not lost on accountants for the utility companies. You should take note of what is used commercially, because the simple economic facts show us what has saved money for a commercial enterprise and which products have not produced similar savings. What’s the bottom line for the homeowner? You now know that horizontal wind generator designs will continue to be much more economically favorable to construct, own and maintain than wind vertical axis turbines.
